The Myth About Traveling Alone

“I am going traveling for six months”. “Oh cool, who are you going with?”. “I am going alone”. “What!? How will you stand to be alone for all that time?”. This is how it can sound when you declare your travel plans. The thing people sometimes miss is that you are never really alone.

First of: I totally understand the reaction. Secondly: It could not be further from the truth. You are never really alone unless you really want to be.

Even on the bus to the airport or on the plane, boat or whatever way you travel by, there are people! Traveling is not only about seeing new places and eating new food while trying new things, it is also about meeting new people!

Regardless if you are traveling your own country or to some foreign place, there are people there to talk too.

Even if you do not speak the same language, a little bit of gesturing and a smile will often get you to where you want to go.

“But you do not know anyone there?” No of course not when I arrive, but when I leave I will know a lot of people.

Traveling alone is beautiful in the way that you can go wherever you please at any given time. You do not have to consider a whole groups wishes and requirements.

And there are so many other travelers to meet! If you are staying in a hostel there is never anyone farther away than a conversation. Talk to the people around you and maybe you will find someone going the to the same place or in the same direction as you.

So you are never really alone unless you really want to be. It is all up to you and it is a nice freedom to have. Also thanks to the internet and social medias, it is so easy to find other like minded people even in massive cities at Bangkok for example and other places.

If you have never been on a solo travel then I really encourage you to try it out. See what happens and see who you meet! It is a great and very giving adventure and if you are up for it, it will surely be a memory for life!
